Lenio Kaklea Les oiseaux

Constituting a world of song, dance and love, birds are also figures of surveillance struggling for territory. Drawing from studies presenting a fresh perspective on birds, choreographer Lenion Kaklea interrogates our relationship to borders and utopias in a society where freedom and enslavement are more than ever in precarious balance.

In a new work conceived for 7 performers, Lenio Kaklea draws from her reading of Habiter en oiseaux by Vinciane Despret in which the philosopher takes a fresh look at lives that we don’t fully understand. Her perspective leads the choreographer through a world fraught with signs and behaviors (mating dances, territorial fights, cries and songs) where bodies defy gravity, connect in space and communicate with each other, supportive and close together but independent. Les Oiseaux translates that into an ambitious stage setup where video, soundscapes and the choreographing of group movements play off the contrasts in intensity and rhythm. The brisk, dynamic and intense choreography generates unison, stillness and dissonance as the soundscape shapes both the silence and the stunning recordings of colonies of several million birds made by the CNRS bioacoustics lab.
Images shot and projected live offer different perspectives on the body and movement, defying gravity as well. Finally, the choreographer wrote some short texts with playwright Lou Forster. These pop in at various moments and extend the reflection on our relationship with the environment, borders and utopias, following up on the 2023 Αγρίμι (wildcat) where she was exploring the forest as a physical and imaginary place for the obliteration of identity and the transformation of bodies.
