It took a TV competition for Marco da Silva Ferreira to stand out from the pack, placing first at So you think you can dance in 2010. The autodidact, who is a physiotherapy graduate and high-level swimmer, displays a movement style where pop culture meets hip hop. After working with Paulo Ribeiro, Hofesh Shechter and Victor Hugo Pontes, Ferreira broke out as a choreographer with acclaimed pieces like He(r)mano and BROTHER. His flowing and energetic style is served by a wonderfully diverse “family” of performers. Each of his pieces challenges mainstream conformism and asserts a social intention as well as the joy of performing together on stage. Commissioned works for other companies such as Via Katlehong and Ballet de Lorraine ensued. This new and much anticipated piece is a powerful and exciting exploration of themes such as militancy and militarization, manliness and violence as well as the complex interaction between patriarchal systems and emotions. For Ferreira, dance is an ideal vehicle to investigate the world, engage with our fears and bring hope. To deliver that vision, an arena stage configuration allows the audience to enjoy the show up close. Merging various choreographic languages, from club dances to street-born movements, F*cking Future proclaims our need for community.
