Maguy Marin May B

Inspired by the writings of Samuel Becket and her meeting him, Maguy Marin offers a poignant take on humanity and its bodily expressions. Five men and five women perform this masterpiece, their faces covered in clay, wandering through the dark vagaries and despondencies of our day-to-day, where the absurd meets cruel ingenuity.

Maguy Marin has established herself as one of the preeminent artists of contemporary dance in France and around the world. Her highly theatrical choreographies are exceptionally impactful. This evocative power and choreographic vigor probably stem from her family background and training, as well as her raw and uncompromising disposition towards herself. Her parents, Spanish refugees, can probably take credit for her political consciousness and her fiery personality. May B, which was choreographed in 1981 at the outset of the contemporary explosion, has enduring power. Inspired by her reading of the works by writer Samuel Beckett, whom she met when he was 75, the piece brilliantly conveys his dark and biting style thanks to thorough choreographic and rhythmic work. Inventing a dance based on walking and pacing, with jerky, spasmodic, hard-edged choreography, the piece has become a signature of her output. All this work serves a vision of humanity, both grotesque and suffering, full of hope and worry. Marin punches holes in our imagination for these pitiful and endearing characters with clumsy and breathless bodies to sneak through. So where does the title come from? An early play by Beckett called May be and the writer’s mother’s name, May, and the initial of her family name.
