Tiaen tiamen means “me and us” in Paiwan language, an ethnic group from South-East Taiwan. Over electro psychedelic music and immersed in a visual mood created from video projections and lasers, the dancers tell about youth and self-exploration, adequately balancing indigenous culture and futuristic visions.

It’s bright, it’s loud, it’s often a bit brash. Bula, as he is affectionately known, is a favourite. It was no surprise when, at the end, the audience cheered enthusiastically. But it’s not a work without issues. It’s very much the fireworks of the technology that stick in the memory rather than the choreography..
In tiaen tiamen, artists join forces to lure dancers to leap into the flow and release the infinite momentum exclusive to their utmost restless youth.
From the joy and freedom of childhood to the pressures of peers, from the awkward yet exquisite flowering of individuality and sexual awakening and finally to rebellion in the face of the conformist weight of the surrounding society, this beautifully fraught mix is powerfully expressed by the exceptional talent of the Bulareyaung Dance Company.
