Faustin Linyekula et Franck Moka Profanations

From Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of Congo where they live, griot choreographer Faustin Linyekula and videographer/musician Frank Moka imagine a history of Congo. One more story of suffering. No, a story to break the cycle of blood, mud and tears. Anything that keeps the party going because no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

Profanations is a journey mixing music, dance and film, a wild celebration in contrast to Congo’s colonial history. Faustin Linyekula and Franck Moka enlist music like a shout, a collective trance of guitars, percussions and voices interlocking into an electric litany. A long endless song, a prayer turned revolt, that is the act of desecrating, breaking the cycle of suffering and domination. A woman alone, standing, dances to exhaustion, carrying within herself the rebellion of a people. At the intersection of art forms, Profanations builds on the research carried out at Studios Kabako, founded by Linyekula in Kisangani. The artist, a self-defined griot, continues to delve into the memory of Congo. Alongside Franck Moka, he builds up a show where each note and each movement interrogate the role of art in the face of political and social violence. The history of African contemporary dance is defined by these bodies of resistance, from Germaine Acogny to Grégory Maqoma. “Profanations” continues this lineage and contrasts it with the cruelty of the present. A celebration, maybe the last party, to spirit away sadness and reaffirm the power of movement. The choreographer writes: “Profanations is one more story of negroes trying to keep standing. Partying, maybe for the last time, not to die sad. Because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring.”
