Marlene Monteiro Freitas NÔT

Season 25 26
Show

In One Thousand and One Nights, Sheherazade, the sultan’s new wife, fights every night to survive and thwarts a deadly fate. Cape Verdean choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas draws from this masterpiece of Arabian literature and the strength of its heroine to create a show in which movement conveys redemptive speech.

The eminent Cape Verdean choreographer takes on the famous tale of The Thousand and One Nights and slips in her mechanical, political and almost incantatory movement language.  A magnificent and exhilarating show that defies convention and upends our sense of reality.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas is a star of contemporary dance, as evidenced by the Silver Lion award she received from the Venice Biennale in 2018. She was featured artist at the Festival d’Automne in 2022 and this summer she will be the first artist ever to open the Cour d’Honneur with a dance performance at the Festival d’Avignon.
Her very personal dance style is what makes her a star with an instantly recognizable choreographic and pantomimic signature. In Freitas’ style, movement takes over the entire body from tongue to toe to eye sockets.

In NÔT, she holds back the night because Sheherazade might die at dawn. Freitas focuses on this survival experience. Through dance she conveys the energy of tales passed down from generation to generation. Movement turns into flow intersected, hampered and counteracted by other flows. The piece playfully taps into the ambiguities between vice and virtue, the immense and the minuscule, lies and truth.
