Anyone who has never loved to death can blame this reviewer. Does anyone ever stop being age 11 to 15? Hopefully not. Or else life would be deathly boring. The dancer/choreographer reconnects with the first times of that feeling of mad love, abyss, rapture, longing and upheaval. The dance of Manège reflects all those words that feel like emotions. It expresses this moment when growth and emotions go into overdrive and approaches all the feelings of this period of life through words and movements.
Manège is a lucid piece, equally choreographic and documentary. Julie Gouju accomplished work that straddles the adult and teenager worlds fittingly, and she collected the stories of the students she met while building the piece and made them hers.  As a result, the show steers clear of any caricature and reconnects us to our middle school days, that time when we danced freely in our bedrooms. It’s about time we did that again, isn’t it? 
 

A very talented actress, Julie Gouju moves us deeply with emotions and body movements brimming with sensitivity and truth. Through dance, which for her is a source of life, she reaches ecstasy. Manège beautifully captures the difficult transformation from childhood to adolescence, finally arriving at self-acceptance. A realistic gem—intelligent, powerful, funny, and unsettling.
