Fanny de Chaillé Avignon, une école

Avignon, une école, is a fascinating journey into the history of the Festival d’Avignon, a sensitive and engaged exploration of theater through the archives and the bodies of the young performers. Fanny de Chaillé, an artist working across multiple art forms, looks to the past to study the present and contemplate the future.  

It all started in 2020 when she was approached by the Festival d’Automne in Paris and ADAMI (artists rights management organization) to work with newly graduated young actors. She put together Le Choeur and noticed a gap: these young actors are poorly familiar with the history of their own practice. She then decided to pass on that legacy, to look at what came before them, not as an academic exercise but as material to play around with and absorb. This process culminated in several works, including the latest one with the students of La Manufacture in Lausanne: Avignon, une école.

Here the festival archives become a playground. Texts, sounds and images all work to inspire reflection and transformation. Far from a stilted tribute, the show revives memories, replays the past to better understand and contrast it with the present. Fanny de Chaillé and her young troupe rekindle traces, conjure up theatrical figures and investigate what the festival is about and what it can still pass on. 
Embracing all the tensions and debates, Chaillé turns them into a creative force. Because a theater is not just a communal space, it is a place of friction and questioning. Here the famous quote from Jean Vilar makes perfect sense: “the theater exists not only to connect people but also, and above all, to divide them and inspire reflection and discussion.”

Grounded in the history of the Festival d’Avignon, Avignon, une école does not merely revisit the past. It experiences, contrasts and interrogates it. Chaillé delivers a stirring piece where transmission becomes a creative act and the memory of theater lodges in the bodies and voices of these young performers.
