Collectif ÈS About Lambada

Who has never been caught up in Kaoma’s La Lambada, a worldwide hit released in 1989 even before the Berlin wall fell, opening a border and ushering in a new world? The collective ÈS pulls from this unifying and popular hit to create a group piece that connects and brings bodies closer together.

The collective ÈS proposes a physical study of the hit song La Lambada whose huge popularity marks a symbolic milestone as the fall of the Berlin wall and the triumph of the neoliberal model paved the way for globalization. As it travels the world, the song plagiarizes an old Bolivian song and conveys numerous cliches. Its universal appeal stems from a musical and advertising streamlining that proved to be very enduring. It is this process and its implications that the three choreographers and performers of the collective focus on, building on long-time work on the trio format, here doubled to accommodate the issues of a group piece: how to show several individuals living together within a group and several groups in the same space? Each of the two trios follows their own rules. One is tasked with keeping up the rhythms of the musical theme while the other reacts to the perception of bodies coming together, huddling and swaying. Can their visions cross-fertilize into other ways of growing together and gathering in the same space? About Lambada combines two areas of focus that have driven the collective since their formation in 2011 by Sidonie Duret, Jérémy Martinez and Émilie Szikora: the question of the collective and that of the transmission of popular references. As it seeks to connect bodies like a song can, the piece expresses the need to approach the theater as a popular, unifying and utopian venue.

Belinda Mathieu, sceneweb
