Now a classic from the repertoire of choreographer Gisèle Vienne since it premiered in 2017, Crowd features 15 male and female dancers – embodying just as many characters and stories – on a stage turned into a dusty wasteland and strewn with the piles of an ongoing party. Caught up in the swirling rhythms of this rave party, the bodies experience various physical and emotional states, dancing to a curated soundtrack spanning the history of electronic music, with a particular focus on Detroit techno and the collective Underground Resistance. Crowd is a sensory experience where the relationship to time is altered by the performers’ movements. Slow motions, jerks, stops and loops create powerful images and constantly redesign the arrangement of bodies, timelines and fictions. While letting the audience play a critical role in how they will see and experience the piece, the choreographer approaches partying as an alternative space to dance, experiment, meet and live with a little more intensity.
