Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Alain Franco — Rosas
The Goldberg Variations, BWV988
Co-production with the MC93
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker herself dances to these Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach. A star casting for an elevating performance.
With the Goldberg Variations, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her dialog with the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, which began in 1993 with Toccata and has continued ever since, tirelessly exploring the correspondences and tensions between the mathematically rigorous structures of musical composition and her choreographic thinking. In the Goldberg Variations, Bach pushes the density of his writing to the extreme, playing with all the resources of variation, canon and fugue. A playful and complex score, for which Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker returns to the solo form, which she performs herself. Of note is that De Keersmaeker conceived this piece as her last solo, an opportunity to re-read the path she has taken in the light of contemporary questions, to update a vocabulary and to probe the persistence of her desire as a choreographer. What she finds in these jubilant variations places her definitively on the side of play, invention and reinvention of the self.
