As part of the France-Portugal 2022 Season
WITH THE PARIS AUTUMN FESTIVAL
"Dancing with a difference", that is the translation of the name of the company inviting choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas to explore the ability of the human body to perform unfettered and free dance.
A major creative force in today’s contemporary dance, the Cape Verdean Marlene Monteiro Freitas offers aesthetics wavering between the grotesque and the magical. In her work bodies – often embellished with makeup – conjure up alluring faraway places. For the piece Ôss, she reached out to the company Dançando com a Diferença, which is based on Madeira Island. The inclusive dance troupe invites choreographers with the aim of developing fruitful collaborations. From François Chaignaud to La Ribot, the list is getting longer and longer. The bone, this equally integral and fragile component of the body, assumes the role of a gatekeeper and revelator of ancient secrets. In order to give each performer materials to express themselves with, Marlene Monteiro Freitas intends to show a “strong skeleton where the foot serves as the brain, the heart as an elbow, the knees as liver...”, regardless of the tough or soft quality of each of those elements.
