Batsheva Dance Company / Ohad Naharin
MOMO
Coproduction with La Villette
Ohad Naharin's next creation promises new emotions: a large stage, eighteen dancers. We’ll sign up, no questions asked.
Each visit by the Batsheva Dance Company to Chaillot is an event. Each creation, a hope. Ohad Naharin, the troupe's resident choreographer and inventor of the Gaga technique, is more than ever a free spirit in contemporary dance. Beyond his influence on a whole generation of choreographers, from Sharon Eyal to Hofesh Shechter, Ohad Naharin has been able to unite performers from all over the world around an ideal of beauty and creativity. Some of his pieces, such as Decadance, Hora and Kamuyot, are now practically classics in a brilliant career. With its precise gestures, channelled energy and exacerbated musicality, Naharin's movement is in touch with its time. This season in Paris, the choreographer has announced a new creation for 18 dancers. It is an understatement to say that it is highly anticipated.

MOMO has two souls. One sends long roots to the depths of the earth – a soul that embodies archetypes and myths of hardened, raw masculinity, and the other is in a constant search for an individual and distinct DNA; one moves within its own autonomous and independent force field and the other is a constellation of elements that spin around the same nucleus – alternately drifting away and towards it, making room for necessary tenderness and catharsis.
With a soundtrack comprised mostly of the album Landfall by the legendary Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet, one of the foremost contemporary classical music ensembles, a shared passion of deep sorrow and beauty unfolds on stage. Relinquishment becomes a dedicated search for a crack, and glitches in the movement code turn out to be free, playful, and emotive material.
