As part of the France-Portugal 2022 Season
Starting from the figure of Marengo, Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite horse, the choreographer presents a dream-like journey that mixes polyphonic songs, dance and eerie apparitions.
The color marengo is a dark bluish gray. It is often described as wet asphalt. But it is through Marengo – Napoleon’s famous warhorse – that Ana Isabel Castro introduces herself, dancing through her stories, memory and imagination. The events she relates feel so real that we don’t know if they actually happened or belong to someone else’s story. The piece, which premiered in 2019 during the Festival Dias da Dança at Teatro Municipal de Porto where it was hosted as part of a two-year residence, is built up from the Portuguese choreographer’s stream of consciousness and the abstractions born from her fears and desires. The mesmerizing self-performer surrounds herself with three celestial voices and a mysterious horse braider with magical powers.
