One of the leading contemporary dance companies joins forces with three exceptional choreographers: after Skid, Damien Jalet presents his new creation, Kites. Imre and Marne van Opstal explore the limits of body and mind with To Kingdom Come.

After Skid, performed at Chaillot in 2019 and premiered in 2017 in Göteborg, a breathtaking show in which the seventeen dancers of the GöterborgsOperans Danskompani performed on a 34° slope, Damien Jalet created Kites for the Swedish company. For this new piece, the Franco-Belgian choreographer has brought back almost the same team that made Skid a success, with New York artist Jim Hodges on the sets and designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard on the costumes. The music this time is by Mark Pritchard, a close collaborator of Thom Yorke. Kites reminds us that life and dance hang by a delicate thread that a breeze could blow away. But its flight uses and thwarts opposing forces, like the hope that overwhelms us and gives us the natural strength to resist.

Imre and Marne van Opstal are brother and sister. Together they have danced mainly for Nederlans Dans Theater 1 and 2, and for the Batsheva Dance Company. They have developed an inimitable style that combines the fluidity of neoclassical dance with theatrical elements, a visceral and raw dance that draws on existential questions. Their work is about the human condition, the limits and possibilities of the body and mind. Their new work explores how trauma affects both the individual and their environment. Throwing the formidable dancers of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani into their surreal world at the edge of reality, drawing them into instinctive movement that is as physical as it is emotional, this creation confirms the excellence of the Swedish company.
