IDA don’t cry me love
Lara Barsacq pays tribute to Ida Rubinstein, the legendary dancer of the Ballets Russes. Combining personal memories and archives, the choreographer composes an ode to freedom that inspires energy and audacity.
IDA don't cry me love is a declaration of love to Ida Rubinstein. This affection comes from afar: Lara Barsacq grew up with a portrait of the artist, a patron of the arts with a sense of freedom, hanging on her wall. This strongly inspired the dancer, who is now an associate artist at Charleroi Danse. On stage, Lara Barsacq, Marta Capaccioli and Marion Sage bring us into Rubinstein's current writing by occupying a glittery and animal stage. The result is the sensation of seing Matisse's La Danse in motion: with steps of three in the round, lines where the arms cross the other bodies, IDA don't cry me love is a dive into the avant-garde of the 20th century. To see this show is to fully grasp Ida Rubinstein, a free woman and above all a pioneer. Just one example: it was she who commissioned the Bolero from Ravel. Without Ida, no Bolero! Neither by Béjart nor by Pina Bausch. A sadder world indeed, right?
