The Spanish collective KOR’SIA tackles Giselle, the quintessentially romantic ballet, and brings it into our time. Wild love is here elevated by a madly hopeful troupe.
The young collective KOR’SIA consists of choreographers Antonia de Rosa and Mattia Russo as well as the two associate artistic directors Giuseppe Dagostino and Agnès López-Rio. KOR’SIA has revisited classics before, as they did with Somiglianza, an interpretation of L’après-midi d’un faune, or on their latest work, Giselle, co-produced with Teatros del Canal in Madrid, last December. Reinterpreting past works in order to make them relevant to our times gives them an opportunity to recreate imagery, and as philosopher Paul Valéry said: “there is no such thing as completed poems. There are only abandoned poems”. Giselle, which fits into this tumultuous repertoire, is one of the most beautiful love stories of ballet. In the age of new technology shaking up our relationships, including love ones, what can dance do? In this luminous set, Giselle strikes us as the epitome of an entire youthful, tech-savvy generation still searching for true love. The movement language of KOR’SIA draws upon high-powered ensembles and the unrelenting dedication of the performers. It all fits together, from the floor-level movement to close-contact dance duos and the samples from the original score. And while hearts get broken, reminding Giselle of her own situation, the dance leaves us enraptured.
