With Imminentes, choreographer Jann Gallois creates a collective dance performed by six women. On stage the bodies come together, interact and support each other as if driven by the same energy. The movements spread out from performer to performer, building up a ritual and creating a community. Through the calm and deep strength emerging from movement, the choreographer can transform our outlook on the world.
The piece is in keeping with the aesthetic vision of Jann Gallois, a choreographer with a hip-hop background renowned for her highly physical language mixing urban and contemporary dance. Since her company BurnOut was established, the now co-director of Agora, cité internationale de la danse in Montpellier has pursued an expressive and precise language of gestures that probes human nature and the ways in which individuals can act together.
For her new work, the artist draws from the energy of the feminine. The women dancers come across as powerful figures, much like witches, goddesses or nymphs. They embody a collective force that can outweigh the violence and tensions of the present. However, the show doesn’t advocate for any cause. Instead, it offers a poetic meditation on the connections between human beings.
In the history of dance, this approach evokes certain ritualistic and communal forms as well as the legacy of urban dance where energy flows among the performers. In Gallois’ work, that flow becomes a metaphor for a humanity seeking harmony.
