Aina Alegre - CCN de Grenoble & STUDIO FICTIF FUGACES
FUGACES is a loose interpretation of the dance style of Carmen Amaya, one of flamenco’s greatest “bailaora”. Enlisting a multi-talented cast of performers, choreographer Aina Alegre connects the work of La Amaya – who has consistently challenged the codes of flamenco – to our present time. FUGACES is a subdued homage as well as a departure.

Carmen Amaya was destined to strike the imagination of Aina Alegre, a prolific choreographer now at the helm of Centre chorégraphique de Grenoble. However, with Aina Alegre, nostalgia gives way to modernity, that of La Amaya, a gypsy courted by Hollywood, a strong woman in a world of men, a myth despite herself.
FUGACES is aptly titled as it defies rhythm, bringing out a miniature brass band on stage, offering a round dance where the performers wear their vests open across their chests or skirts over pants as if to hold off a certain flamenco folklore. Several times, the show takes the audience into a fiesta, with the dancers subverting the floor strikes characteristic of flamenco or the arched back poses. To Aina Alegre, Carmen Amaya is a kind of gracious ghost watching over this energetically flamboyant piece. From Ravel’s deconstructed Boléro to the projected images of Amaya, everything falls into place. To our delight.
