On stage, a man and a young boy. Their knowing tandem shows through gesture the complex and sensitive links of filiation. Better than a simple show, a “physical essay on paternity”.

It is very rare to put one’s own child on stage. But the project of Sylvain Bouillet, dancer, acrobat and choreographer, was precisely to question the key elements of parenthood. In Des gestes blancs, he proposes an amusing variation on a play of strength, imbalance and harmony that is inherent in his relationship with Charlie, aged eight. Father and son worked side-by-side, for a whole year, during weekly workshops to build together this singular duo. Between the “desire to play as two” and modest tenderness, the piece miraculously combines the spontaneity of childhood and the precision of writing. It explores the density of bodies, counterweights, tensions. It also revisits the figure of the lift, the ballet’s identity totem, whether it be classical or contemporary, but also a situation relevant to all young parents. Surprising, full of meaning, his approach puts into dance, in accordance with the beautiful ambition of the Naïf production collective, “the gravity of the world”.Isabelle Calabre
