“Everywhere the family makes arrangements and assigns roles to its constituent members.”Family machine offers an enjoyable variation on a universal and still relevant theme.

For the two directors and choreographers of the Toujours après minuit company, the so-called “cubist” writing of Gertrude Stein - with its repetitions and almost musical leitmotivs - is a bottomless source of inspiration. Their new piece draws upon the meaty content of The Making of the Americans: Being a History of a Family’s Progress, published in France in 1933. The insights of the American essayist into the family and the behaviors that it entails among its members feed into a rhythmic theatricality where voice and body are inseparable. Actors and dancers act as the performers of an ‘otherworldly sound poetry that interrogates the “function-roles” assigned to each family member. Their gestures, silences or words define the codes of a micro-universe, a miniature reflection of the outside world. Brigitte Seth and Roser Montllo Guberna offer an open-ended and thrilling show that mixes up viewpoints and languages, ultimately letting the audience moderate the debates. Isabelle Calabre
