As part of the Season Africa 2020

The choreographers Dalisa Pigram, Serge Aimé Coulibaly and six astounding dancers of the Australian company Marrugeku look into the cultural and political sensitivities of New Caledonia and Australia.

“Colonisation moulded us. Undoing the past is impossible,” is what Le Dernier Appel says, a piece inscribed in a specific context of the History of the Pacific and decolonisation that bears an important reflexion on colonial cultural heritage. The Marrugeku company is a symbol in itself of this vast territory, from Australia to the South Pacific, bringing together a multi-ethnic team of Kanak and Aborigine dancers, who have come from immigration and former colonists living in Australia and New Caledonia. For this piece, the artistic directors of Marrugeku, Dalisa Pigram and Rachael Swain, have called upon the Burkinabe choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly. Together they question the disappearance of the old way of life, the impact of the self-determination referendum in 2018 and the History of peoples. Between urban dance and forgotten traditional dance, Le Dernier Appel explores political and personal interactions of the emancipation of today and yet to come, like a last call to put things in order and as the sign of a new world!
