Meeting Philippe Decouflé, May 2017

Now Associate Artist at Chailot, Philippe Decouflé is also one of its longtime friends. His impish and inventive dance is always a hit here. It will return with a bang this Winter and Spring !

This show consists of several short pieces. Their common thread is that they are written by the same author, performed by the same artists and presented the same day. Many modern dance shows that have stuck with me are constructed this way. The American choreographers that have influenced me, including Georges Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham and Alwin Nikolais,  almost always make adaptable shows made up of short pieces. I think this system is well suited to dance, where writing is often more poetic than narrative, and the form must be tailored to the subject. Finally, and more importantly, my attachment to short forms comes from rock and roll : short and powerful songs that gain momentum as they get shorter. / Philippe Decouflé.
