Le Sucre du printemps

Le Sucre du printemps will be the culmination of a year’s worth of workshop activity with about 30 adolescents from ages 10 to 20, selected from our audiences and from that of the Centre national de la danse.
With Le Sucre du printemps, artist and scenographer Rachel Garcia and educator and choreographer Marion Muzac propose a different take on the The Rite of Spring, a pivotal piece in dance’s history created in 1913 by Nijinski and Stravinsky for the Russian ballets. Stravinsky’s vision of a great sacral and pagan rite symbolically evokes the core concerns that sweep adolescence – departure, emancipation and freedom desires – and also documents the helplessness of youth facing conformity and fatality. Today, nearly 30 dancers from the Paris area will revive the isolated dance rituals that everyone practises in their privacy or in the urban environment. Together they will try to create a surreal culture that mirrors who they are, a kind of new folklore. Bound up with Stravinsky’s original music, this new celebration of The Rite stages the choreographic and visual directions delivered by the adolescents.
