With Le Songe, Jean-Christophe Maillot tackles Shakespeare’s comedy Midsummer Nights’ Dream and turns it into a wildly original ballet, served by a troupe of unanimously talented dancers illuminating this summer night.

Heading the Ballets de Monte-Carlo since 1993, Jean-Christophe Maillot has successfully developed a company of his time, reinterpreting the classics,  inviting young choreographers, etc. Consisting of about 20 nationalities, the company is now well-acclaimed around the world. “We have always had a double purpose: to create and disseminate”, the choreographer-director summarizes. In 2005, Jean-Christophe Maillot conceived Le Songe, a choreographic variation based on Shakespeare’s play.  He choreographs three universes  -  those of the Athenians, fairies, and craftsmen - , in a lovely blend of amorous tribulations. The scenes move along frantically, showcasing the expressive dancers who turn out to be amazing actors as well. The fantastic interacts with the burlesque in a ceaseless pas de deux replete with goblins and other creatures.  Served by the music of Felix Mendelssohn, Daniel Teruggi and Bertrand Maillot, this Songe is a daydream.
