Robert Swinston, formerly dancer and assistant to Merce Cunningham, heads the  Angers-based CNDC company, which reprises three pieces by the American choreographer, including the famous Beach Birds.

Founded in 1978, the Centre national de danse contemporaine  in Angers promotes creation as a forum of multi-disciplinary research and experimentation. Robert Swinston – a stalwart dancer of Merce Cunningham’s American company, has been its artistic director since 2013. With the CNDC company, he presents his own pieces and passes on the legacy of “Merce”, an unrelenting seeker. Here he reinterprets a piece that has yet never been performed entirely in France : How to Pass, Kick, Fall and Run. It is built around stories written by composer John Cage, a longtime friend of Merce Cunningham. Each piece – one-minute long – is drawn randomly, read in French by two actors and performed along with the choreography. This is followed by Inlets 2 (1983) and Beach Birds (1991), two complementary pieces focusing on nature studies. The first one breathes at the edge of a creek where music runs. The second takes off at the edge of the sea, the bird-dancers moving on an individual path.
