In Carmen(s), José Montalvo takes on a woman figure who epitomizes “singing and dancing revolt.” A modern hero for troubled times. And an ode to freedom.

After Don Quichotte du Trocadéro (2013) and Y Olé ! (2015), to name a few recent ones, José Montalvo gives the Chaillot audience a new opportunity to discover his dreamscape where dance interacts with personal memories. He has chosen the figure of Carmen, which he uses in the plural form.  I like Carmen because this radiant piece allows me to ponder issues that I’ve been concerned about : immigration, the values of genre-bending, childhood, comments José Montalvo. In a disquieting world where  isolation, exclusion and rejection are gaining ground, he views Carmen as a comrade-in arms of the likes of the major 20th century women icons.  Georges Bizet, the opera’s composer, who never went to Spain, made artistic cross-pollination  an ode to beauty. “Carmen is an exhilarating  fireworks of life and rhythms. This music is imbued with a child-like quality, a greatly joyful depth. And it’s a real challenge to make a choreographic piece out of it.”
